A Brief History

Children’s Compassion Fund is a charity set up expressly to channel gifts to transform the lives of abandoned, destitute children, with a focus on special needs orphans in China. It is affiliated with The Faith & Freedom Network of Boone, Iowa.

In China, services are provided through Shepherd’s Field Children’s Village, located between Beijing and Tianjin in Hebei province. The Village is a full-service childcare center with several homes for orphaned children, totaling 140 residents at a time, plus a medical clinic and Little Lambs Preschool.

Lifesaving programs

Other pages on this website describe in detail the lifesaving programs of Shepherd’s Field Children’s Village. They are outgrowths of a ministry that began in 1991 when a young American teacher, Philip Hayden, first visited China and began volunteering his time and efforts to help its abandoned children. Friends Tim and Pam Baker joined him and began to set up the first orphanage, then Philip died unexpectedly of a rare heart defect at the age of 28. The Bakers, who now direct the ministry, established The Philip Hayden Foundation in 1995 to continue the work and honor his memory and loving service.

A legacy of love

Although Philip Hayden’s young life was cut short, and though Shepherd’s Field Children’s Village has been in existence for only a decade, their ministry has grown rapidly and has already created a rich legacy of love for the orphaned, special-needs children of China. Many hundreds of “broken” babies and infants have been taken in and cared for, over 3,000 surgeries have been performed to save their fragile lives, and more than 600 have been placed in loving adoptive homes. Yet the need for their work is ongoing, and it is great. Thank for you helping us make sure the outstanding ministry of Shepherd’s Field Children’s Village continues.

Other expressions of compassion

In addition to our support for the programs in China, and separate from it, Children’s Compassion Fund sent a grant to Mendies Haven in Kathmandu, to help provide care for 32 orphans. Mendies Haven has been in operation since 1953, rescuing hundreds of destitute children, many of whom have grow up to be solid Nepali citizens holding responsible professional positions—nurses, teachers, mechanics and electricians, as well as pastors of new Christian churches.
