Being the world to one person

In the world you may be one person, but to one person you might just be the world.
—Author unknown

There is a fallacy in the world which suggests that if you cannot solve the problem for everyone, you might as well not try for anyone. Those who subscribe to this line of thinking would say that the problem of orphans in China is too large, so they do not bother to get involved on any level. But within each of us is the power to be the solution for at least one child.

Consider the beautiful life of Pamela, pictured to the right. She is not a statistic—she is a sweet baby who was born with special needs and abandoned by her parents. Because of caring people who donated money for surgery to help her, Pamela received corrective surgery in December 2004. What is left of her surgical scar is fading fast. Soon she will be adopted into a loving family. Perhaps when she is older, her parents may tell her about the incredible adversities that she faced as a child. She will grow up to enjoy a happy, normal childhood because people chose to step into the shoes of her missing parents and help her. Within everyone is the desire to leave a mark in this world—some legacy which will tell of our place in the world. What more beautiful legacy can there be than to use the excess resources we have been given to come to the rescue of a child in need?

A changed destiny

Deborah on playground

This beautiful and perfectly healthy little girl was abandoned by her parents as an infant probably because they wanted a son. She was brought to Langfang, and now has a new life with a loving adoptive family in the USA.
